How to Deal with a Family Member who is Bipolar
If you have a family member who is bipolar, you will have to cope up with their peculiarities and eccentricities. You will also need to deal with their capricious behaviours. The bipolar people sometimes do not know how they are reacting and they can have irrational mood swings. Bipolar people also suffer from hallucinations. Here is how you can deal with the family member who is bipolar.
The first thing you will need to understand very clearly that bipolarity is a mental disease. This means that any erratic behaviour you may encounter is not the result of their bad nature. The bipolar people do not know what to do most of the times and hence they need to be treated with compassion. Just like any other serious illness, this one also needs to be dealt with carefully.
Bipolar people do need proper medical attention. Since it is a disease related to the mental health of the person, the bipolar person needs to see a psychiatrist. Do not become their doctor. You just need to be their support. Do not try to treat them on your own. Bipolar people need certain medications that can only be prescribed by a psychiatrist.
You will need to associate every action of your family member with their mental illness. This means that you will have to forgive them for certain misdoings as well. If you are able to deal with them patiently, you will be able to help them in a much better way.
There will be times when you will lose your patience and perhaps temper. Do not be too harsh on yourself. Do not live in guilt. Just resolve to act better the next time.
